Abstract

The study aims precision of the systematic position of some dubious forms of the reitteri species-group of the subgenus Archiplectes, genus Carabus (Coleoptera, Carabidae), based on the study of extensive comparative material originating from the Northwest Caucasus. The material was collected primarily by hand and using long-term pitfall traps in 1997–2020 in Protected Areas of the Krasnodarsky Krai (Russia) and adjacent territories of Abkhazia, namely Sochinskiy All-Republican State Wildlife Sanctuary, Caucasian State Nature Biosphere Reserve, Ritsa Relict National Park, and Pskhu-Gumista State Nature Reserve. As a result, Carabus (Archiplectes) kurilini sp. nov. has been distinguished and described from the upper reaches of River Mzymta. Its distribution is mapped; discriminative features and ecological preferences are noted and illustrated. The important role of the upper reaches of the River Mzymta is not only as a zoographic divide, but also as a centre of autochthonous speciation has been confirmed.
